The Annual Deprivation Index
Accurate data delivered every year
The ADI is an invaluable resource for health and economic researchers, local authorities and the UK Government.
It provides researchers with granular, up to date data with which to base their analyses.
It provides decision-makers with a valuable resource for allocating government resources, evaluating policies and understanding socio-economic inequalities.
The index is constructed using high-frequency indicators of health, employment and crime. The annual deprivation index is composed of 3 main domains – economy, health and crime. These cover the main indicators within the existing IMD. Health and crime domains have, in turn, many subdomains, relating to different forms of crime and health conditions (the latter drawn from the NHS quality outcomes framework).
Monitor indicators more frequently to gain insights
Unlike the Index of Multiple Deprivation, the ADI can give you annual insights to better understand local areas.
Core indicators and subdomains
The ADI presents the core indicators of deprivation, so you have the data you need.
The ADI aggregates claimant count data to understand the extent of unemployment across England.
The ADI’s health data is extensive, covering 21 subdomains, including depression, obesity and dementia.
The ADI brings together 14 subdomains of crime, including shoplifting, bicycle theft and anti-social behaviour
Telling a more nuanced story
As the ADI provides data annually, it can provide a more granular picture of deprivation than the IMD
Focusing on local areas
Data from the annual deprivation index can be mapped to compare geographic areas. Parliamentary constituencies, local authorities and neighbourhoods consisting of 650+ households (at LSOA level) can be analysed.
Comparisons at a granular level
Comparing different indicators across areas within a geographic space can reveal previously poorly understood patterns and inform decision-making. Two individual neighbourhoods, or another geographic area, can be compared side-by-side. Individual LSOAs can be isolated and analyses for health deprivations – as seen above, right (using Tower Hamlets LSOAs as examples).
Example of the raw data
ADI provides the raw figures on prevalence rates and individual case numbers of different health problems. Here we present such data for Brighton and Hove in 2020 (data which is not captured by the 2019 IMD, for example). We have selected asthma as an example subdomain.
